The Emerging Photographer Scholarship

Apply for your spot at GeekFest, Sept 16-18th in Washington, DC

PhotoShelter, supporting people and organizations who create and share visual stories, is excited to grant one lucky emerging photographer a spot at GeekFest, aka the "annual badass weekend of inspiration" for the photo community.



Happening September 16-18th, 2016 in Washington, DC, you'll get to spend time with likeminded photojournalists and hear from photographers like Ruddy Roye, Carol Guzy, Greg Kahn, Zun Lee, plus panel discussions with established photo editors and art buyers. It's all taking place at Howard University's School of Communication. More details here.


The scholarship includes:


  • A spot at GeekFest in DC

  • Two nights at the Cambria Hotel

  • Up to $300 for travel and food

  • A free PhotoShelter Pro account for one year

To qualify, participants must be working photographers who have been shooting professionally (i.e. being paid for their work) for eight years or less.


To apply, submit up to a 300 word essay that:


  • Describes your academic/photographic accomplishments

  • States your goals for your photography career

  • Explains why attending GeekFest will help you achieve your goals

  • A link to your online portfolio

  • Please also include: Your name, where you live, your age, and the year you began shooting professionally.

All submissions should be sent to [email protected] no later than MIDNIGHT ET on September 1, 2016. Recipients will be notified on September 6, 2016. Note: If you have already registered for the event, you are still eligible! We will take care of reimbursements if provided with receipts.
